The Spontaneous Choir (2016) is a conceptual no-tech sound work at FARM Cultural Park, Favara (IT)

The Spontaneous Choir consisting of 16 singing zones and one central listening zone. The singing zones are distributed across the area of FARM such that no visual contact exists amongst them and between them and the listening zone.

The Spontaneous Choir is brought to life by usage, action and interaction.

The Spontaneous Choir has no predetermined musical content. Each musical vocal expression is a contribution to the choir. The spontaneous choir grows with the number of people joining in.

The singing zones

On a walk through FARM Cultural Park one will run across several singing zones (zona del canto, yellow).

Visitors are invited to stand in the zones and to sing a tone, a melody or a song.

By responding to somebody else‘s singing, one can intercact and start a duet. With more people joining in, a spontaneous choir is born.

The listening zone

In the center of Farm you find the listening zone (zona d' ascolto, blue). It me marks the perfect area for listening to the spontaneous choir.

Also with nobody singing, the listening zone is an invitation for usage. One may want stand in the zone for a few minutes with eyes closed and just listen to the world around. One will hear all the different activities in FARM and some distant noise from Favara. And with patience and luck, one might hear somebody singing.

Groups of visitors are invited to use the Spontaneous Choir as collective activity.

The general idea behind the work, is to increase people‘s attention towards their acoustic environment.
